Why Email Marketing Still Works Today
When you think about marketing today you probably think TikTok, Instagram, or influencers which is how I used to thing but, something that is still effective today is email marketing. I know it sounds kind of old school but it’s actually one of the most effective ways brands connect with people and honestly we all interact with it way more than we realize.
What Actually Makes Email Marketing Work
Email marketing is not just about sending random promotions and hoping people click. It’s way more strategic than that. One of the biggest things the article talked about is segmentation which just means breaking your audience into smaller groups.
For example if a brand sells clothes they’re not going to send the same email to everyone. Someone who buys gym clothes might get emails about new workout sets while someone else might get emails about dresses or going out outfits. It just makes everything feel more relevant.
Another really important thing is personalization not just like Hi Zoe at the top of the email. It’s more like recommending products based on what you’ve bought before or sending you discounts that actually match your interests. This is why sometimes it feels like brands know you which is kind of scary but also kind of impressive.
The article also talked about subject lines which are honestly everything. If the subject line is boring I’m not opening it. If it says something like “Wait… you forgot something ” or “This deal is literally made for you,” I’m clicking. That first impression really matters.
And then there’s automation which is probably one of the coolest parts. Brands can set up emails that send automatically based on what you do. Like if you leave something in your cart you’ll get a reminder. Or if you sign up for emails you’ll get a welcome message. It’s basically marketing that runs itself but still feels personal.
Why It Still Works So Well
One of the main reasons email marketing is still so popular is because it has a really high ROI (return on investment). Companies don’t have to spend a ton of money but they can still make a lot from it.
Also email gives brands direct access to people. With social media algorithms decide what you see which is honestly so annoying. But emails go straight to your inbox so brands have more control over making sure their message actually reaches you.
Another big thing is that email helps build relationships. Instead of just posting and hoping people notice brands can consistently show up in your inbox with deals, updates, or even helpful tips. Over time that builds trust and makes people more likely to buy from them.
My Thoughts
Before this I honestly thought email marketing was kind of outdated. Like I always saw promotional emails and just ignored them. After actually learning about it I realized I interact with it all the time without even thinking about it.
I always open emails from brands I like if there’s a sale or if the subject line is interesting. Something that always works on me is the abandoned cart emails. I’ll be like “I don’t need this” and then suddenly I’m checking out five minutes later.
I also think email marketing feels more personal than social media. Social media is so fast and chaotic but emails feel more direct like the brand is actually talking to you. Especially when they’re personalized it makes a huge difference.
Another thing I like is how intentional everything is. Emails aren’t just thrown together they’re planned out. The timing, the design, the wording it’s all super strategic. As someone who wants to go into digital marketing I think that’s really interesting because it shows how important both creativity and data are.
At the same time brands can definitely overdo it. If I get too many emails or they’re not relevant I will unsubscribe so fast. So I think the biggest challenge is finding that balance between staying in someone’s inbox and not being annoying.
Final Thoughts
Email marketing is honestly way more powerful than people give it credit for. Even with all the new platforms and trends it’s still one of the best ways to connect with an audience and actually get results.
What surprised me the most is how much strategy goes into it. It’s not just sending emails it’s about sending the right emails to the right people at the right time.
If I ever run my own brand or work for one I would 100% use email marketing. It’s affordable, effective, and when it’s done right it doesn’t even feel like marketing it just feels like getting something useful or exciting in your inbox.

Hi Zoe! I really enjoyed reading your blog post! I agree that we all interact with email marketing way more than we think we do. I like how you mentioned segmentation and breaking down your audience into smaller groups. This helps keep content relevant and personalized to each individual's tastes, which increases the number of individuals that will open an email and read the content. The more personalized we make our email content, the more effective and strategic our approach becomes. Additionally, I like how you compared email marketing to social media and pointed out how email can be more effective and personal to an individual. Great post!
